PGT Fence Installation: The San Francisco Owner’s Guide
If you have a PGT fence product that needs installation, replacement, or repair in San Francisco, the installed cost typically runs $4,130 to $10,620 depending on linear footage, terrain, and whether we’re working with existing posts or setting new ones. Most PGT fence installation jobs in San Francisco are completed within two to four working days once materials are confirmed. The usual discovery path is straightforward: a section starts leaning after a wet winter, a gate stops latching square, or the bottom rail shows rot where fog moisture sat against it. You’re not the first San Francisco homeowner to find PGT fencing that looked great at install but didn’t hold up to what this climate actually does to it.
Bradford Remodeling Co San Francisco installs and services PGT fence systems, and we’re an independent contractor. We are not a PGT dealer or affiliate. That distinction matters because our job is to tell you what the fence actually needs, not to sell you a PGT part number you don’t need.
Which PGT Models This Applies To

PGT fencing in San Francisco generally falls into two camps: aluminum panel systems and vinyl (PVC) privacy fencing. The aluminum lines include PGT’s horizontal rail and picket configurations, most commonly the 5-foot and 6-foot residential panels. The vinyl lines run from 4-foot semi-privacy to 6-foot full-privacy tongue-and-groove panels. The compatibility gotcha we see repeatedly in San Francisco: PGT aluminum panels from before about 2018 used a narrower top rail profile, and newer panels will not slide into older posts without a retrofit bracket. If you’re replacing a single panel on an older run, we measure the top rail channel width rather than ordering by panel height alone. A label on the inside of the post cap or the back of a picket will sometimes show the series, but after a few San Francisco fog seasons those stickers are often unreadable, so physical measurement is the reliable route.
For the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: PGT’s own replacement components are the cleanest fit for a PGT system, especially on the aluminum lines where extrusion profiles are proprietary. Quality aftermarket options exist for vinyl post caps, gate hardware, and concrete anchoring brackets. The call we make on every job is whether the aftermarket part matches the existing profile closely enough that it won’t create a new failure point. For gate hinges and latch assemblies, we recommend OEM every time. Those take the most mechanical load on a San Francisco fence, and the knockoff hardware we’ve pulled off failed gates in the Sunset and Richmond districts has consistently worn out in under two years.

Signs Your PGT Fence Installation Is Failing
- Leaning panels at the post base. In San Francisco, this is usually a post footing problem, not a panel problem. Fog-season moisture saturates the top six inches of soil, and posts set in shallow concrete or in concrete that was never sloped away from the post will start to move. The panel itself is often still straight.
- Gate sag that won’t adjust out. PGT gates use a diagonal brace to hold the rectangle square. When the brace connection works loose, the gate drops at the latch corner. Tightening the brace is step one. If it keeps happening, the hinge post is flexing underground, and re-setting the post is the actual fix.
- White or gray streaking on vinyl panels. This is surface oxidation and mildew working into the PVC. It’s cosmetic at first, but on older PGT vinyl in fog-heavy San Francisco neighborhoods it can signal that the panel’s UV layer is spent and the material is getting brittle.
- Aluminum rail corrosion at any screw point. Dissimilar metal contact, usually a steel screw driven into an aluminum rail without a barrier, starts galvanic corrosion in salt-laden coastal air. Richmond, Sunset, and Bayview fences all show this sooner than inland San Francisco locations.
- Bottom rail rot on wood-core vinyl posts. Some PGT vinyl systems use wood or composite inserts at the post base. When water collects at the base and doesn’t drain, that internal core rots, and the post starts to compress under panel weight. You see it first as a slight dip in the fence line.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s the honest San Francisco pricing picture for PGT fence installation work:
- Single PGT vinyl panel or aluminum section replacement: $350 to $850 installed, depending on panel height and whether we can reuse the existing posts.
- Gate replacement with PGT-compatible frame and hardware: $700 to $1,400 installed, including hinges, latch, and a square set.
- Partial run replacement (up to 30 linear feet): $1,500 to $3,200 installed.
- Full PGT fence installation, typical 50 to 80 linear feet: $4,130 to $10,620 installed, including all posts set in concrete, panels, gate hardware, and site cleanup.
The range is driven by three things: linear footage, whether we’re pulling and replacing old post footings or working with sound existing posts, and access. A sloped San Francisco lot with no side-yard access for a concrete mixer changes the labor math. Every Bradford Remodeling Co San Francisco fence job gets a written line-item price before we start, so you see exactly what the materials cost, what the labor costs, and what the post-setting concrete costs. No number moves at the door. And every completed PGT fence installation carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the work fails inside a year, we return and correct it at no charge. That’s The Garrison Standard, and it’s in writing on every fence we do.
DIY or Call Us?
For a PGT fence, there’s a real split between what’s reasonable to handle yourself and what goes sideways fast. You can safely check what’s happening: whether panels are level, whether posts are plumb, whether gate hinges have visible wear, whether there’s standing water at post bases. That’s useful information to have before you call us. What I’d keep a homeowner away from is digging out and re-setting posts on a sloped San Francisco lot, especially if the fence runs near a retaining wall or sits on a property line. Underground there are gas lines, sewer laterals, and in older neighborhoods, abandoned lines that were never properly marked. And a post set wrong in saturated fog-belt soil will lean again within a year. The other DIY trap is mixing aftermarket vinyl components with PGT panels and expecting a clean fit. We’ve corrected enough of those to know the time and money it costs to undo. If you want us to check it out, call (831) 610-5598 and we’ll give you a straight number and a real scope.
FAQs

How long does a PGT fence last in San Francisco?
In San Francisco’s fog zones, expect 15 to 20 years from PGT vinyl fencing and 20 to 30 from the aluminum lines, with gate hardware usually needing replacement at the 8-to-12-year mark. Coastal salt air and constant moisture shorten that for fences west of 19th Avenue. Call (831) 610-5598 and we’ll assess what’s left in your fence and what it’ll take to get it square again.
Can a failed PGT fence section be repaired instead of replaced?
Often yes. If the posts are sound and the panels are straight, we can replace hardware, re-set a single gate post, or rebuild a bottom rail without pulling the whole run. The call depends on what’s actually failed, and we’ll tell you straight which route costs less. Estimates are free, and the number won’t change once the scope is written.
How long does PGT fence installation take?
A partial repair or single panel swap is usually a one-day job. A full PGT fence installation in San Francisco typically runs two to four working days, with material order time on top of that if we’re pulling specific PGT components. We’ll put the timeline in your written scope before anything starts.
Do you stock PGT fence parts on the truck?
We carry common PGT-compatible gate hinges, latches, post caps, and concrete anchoring hardware on the truck. Panel sections and posts are ordered per job once we’ve measured your existing profiles. If we can’t match an older PGT series directly, we’ll tell you before you spend a dollar and show you what the retrofit looks like.
