PGT Driveway & Pavers: The San Francisco Owner’s Guide

If you have a PGT paver driveway or walkway that’s failing, we stock PGT-compatible pavers and base materials on our trucks, and typical paver repair or replacement in San Francisco runs $4,130 to $21,240 depending on square footage, access, and what’s happening underneath the surface. Most owners discover the problem the same way: a paver sinks after the winter rains, a section shifts near the curb line, or a sand joint washes out and the pavers start rocking underfoot. The fix usually isn’t the paver itself. It’s what’s underneath it, and that’s where most driveway contractors in this city take shortcuts.

We’re Bradford Remodeling Co San Francisco. We’re an independent contractor, not affiliated with PGT, and we’ve been doing hardscape and driveway work across this city long enough to know that San Francisco’s fog belt and clay-heavy soils punish a poorly prepared base faster than almost any climate in California. Curtis Lane, our owner, has been reading soil and drainage conditions on job sites here for over two decades, including a stretch of Outer Sunset rebuilds where fog-driven moisture taught him exactly what water does to a paver base when the substrate isn’t right.

Which PGT Models This Applies To

PGT manufactures interlocking concrete pavers under a few product lines, and the naming convention matters when you’re matching a replacement. The residential lines commonly installed in San Francisco driveways are the PGT Traditional Series, the PGT European Cobble line, and the PGT Permeable pavers, which some Sunset and Richmond district homeowners chose specifically to handle runoff requirements. Each line has its own dimensional spec, typically 60mm or 80mm thickness for driveway traffic, and the paver dimensions differ enough that you cannot drop a Traditional Series paver into a European Cobble field without cutting every edge.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha most homeowners don’t know: PGT pavers are made in specific batch runs, and color lots vary by production date. If your driveway was installed five or seven years ago, a “matching” paver from a new pallet will be close but rarely identical. For small repairs, that’s acceptable. For a section replacement larger than about forty square feet, we typically recommend pulling pavers from an inconspicuous area (behind a gate, along a side path) to blend the visible field, then placing the new stock where it won’t catch the light. It’s the kind of detail that separates a patch job from a repair that actually looks right.

As for OEM versus aftermarket: PGT doesn’t sell “parts” for pavers the way a window or door manufacturer would. A paver is the part. What matters is dimensional match, compressive strength rating (PGT residential pavers are rated around 8,000 psi), and color fastness. Aftermarket equivalents from Belgard or Unilock can work structurally, but the aesthetic match is never guaranteed. We stock a range of PGT pavers and can source exact line items through our supplier network, and we carry the premium hardscape brands listed in our approved material set – Belgard and Unilock among them – when a full replacement makes more sense than a patch.

Signs Your PGT Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

  • Pavers sinking in a low spot or depression. This almost always means the compacted base underneath has failed. In San Francisco, the usual culprit is poor drainage saturating the subgrade, or a base that was never compacted in proper lifts. Patching the surface without fixing the base is a two-month fix at best.
  • Sand washing out of the joints after rain. Polymeric sand is supposed to harden and lock the pavers. When it washes out, either the wrong sand was used for the slope, or water is flowing across the surface with enough volume to erode the joints. You’ll see the telltale pale lines running toward the street.
  • Pavers rocking or shifting when you step or drive on them. Individual pavers moving means the edge restraint has failed or was never installed. A proper paver driveway has a rigid edge restraint along every exposed side. Without it, the whole field drifts outward over time.
  • Efflorescence: a white, chalky film across the paver surface. This is mineral salts migrating through the concrete as moisture evaporates. It’s not structural, but it signals persistent moisture moving through the paver, which in San Francisco usually means a drainage problem somewhere in the system.
  • Cracks running through multiple pavers in a line. A single cracked paver is a paver problem. A line of cracks across a field indicates the base cracked underneath, often from a utility trench that was backfilled without proper compaction. This is common in older San Francisco neighborhoods where sewer laterals and gas lines have been dug up over the decades.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Paver driveway installation in San Francisco runs $8,260 to $21,240 for a full project. A smaller repair, like re-setting a sunken section and re-sanding the joints, lands between $4,130 and $12,980 depending on what we find when we lift the pavers. The price swings on three things: how much base excavation and re-compaction is needed, whether we’re pulling up and reusing your existing pavers or installing new material, and access – some San Francisco driveways are tight enough that every wheelbarrow of base material moves by hand, not machine.

Here’s what a Bradford Remodeling paver repair includes, written in the quote before we start: demolition and removal of the failed section, base assessment and recompaction, new bedding sand, paver reinstallation or replacement, fresh joint sand, and site cleanup. If we find a drainage problem driving the failure, we address it in the quoted scope, not as a change order at the door. Every paver job we complete carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the repair fails within that year, we come back and correct it at no charge. That’s in writing.

DIY or Call Us?

Re-setting individual pavers is something a determined homeowner can attempt for a small spot, if the base under those specific pavers is still sound. You lift the paver, check the bedding sand depth, re-set it, and sweep in fresh joint sand. What you cannot safely or effectively DIY is a structural paver failure: anything that requires base excavation, drainage correction, or recompaction. The compaction equipment alone is a rental and a learning curve, and in San Francisco, working around existing gas lines and sewer laterals under a driveway is not the place to experiment.

If the pavers in question are on a driveway you park on, we’d recommend you call us at (831) 610-5598 before you start the project. We’ll give you a straight number and a real scope. We’ve repaired enough PGT paver failures in this city to know whether you’re looking at a $500 patch or a $12,000 base rebuild, and we’ll tell you which one you’re actually facing.

FAQs

How long do PGT pavers last in San Francisco?

A properly installed PGT paver driveway in San Francisco should last 25 to 40 years. The pavers themselves rarely fail; the base and drainage system determine the real lifespan. We’ve seen pavers here last a decade or three decades on the difference between a 4-inch and an 8-inch compacted base.

Can you repair a PGT paver driveway instead of replacing it?

Yes, most failures we see are repairable. We lift the failed section, rebuild the base and bedding, re-set the pavers, and re-sand the joints. Full replacement only makes sense when the entire field has shifted or the pavers are so degraded from freeze-thaw or salt exposure that matching new stock is impossible. Call (831) 610-5598 and we’ll tell you which path your driveway needs.

How long does a paver repair take?

A section repair, lifting and re-setting a run of pavers with base recompaction, typically takes one to two days for our crew. A full driveway replacement runs three to five days depending on square footage and access. We put the timeline in writing as part of your quote.

Does Bradford Remodeling stock PGT pavers?

We keep common PGT paver profiles and matching joint sand on our trucks for standard San Francisco repairs. For less common sizes or specific color lots, we source through our supplier network, usually within a few days. We’ll confirm availability and lead time before you’re committed to the work.
