Mr-Glass Driveway & Pavers: The San Francisco Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Mr-Glass-compatible driveway and paver components throughout San Francisco, with most replacements priced between $295 and $21,240 depending on whether you’re sealing a joint, replacing a section, or rebuilding the full run. Most driveways and paver systems we service need attention because water has gotten underneath the surface layer and started working against the base. You’ll typically see it first as a low spot holding water after rain, a paver that’s dropped a half-inch below its neighbors, or a hairline crack that shows up in the same place every summer.

Call (831) 610-5598

For context on where this fits: a full paver driveway installation in San Francisco runs $8,260 to $21,240, concrete comes in at $5,310 to $14,160, and a complete driveway replacement lands between $5,900 and $16,520. Sealing work is the lightest touch on the list at $295 to $825. Those are the ranges Curtis Lane and our crew work within, and we put the exact number in writing before anything gets torn out.

Which Mr-Glass Models This Applies To

The Mr-Glass driveway and pavers product line spans interlocking paver units, coping pieces, and edge restraints that are sized to work together as a system. The compatibility issue we see most often in San Francisco is that a homeowner has a Mr-Glass paver field installed years ago, then a later contractor or handyman drops in a generic big-box paver that’s off by a quarter-inch in thickness. It looks fine for a season. Then the freeze-thaw cycles in the Sunset and Richmond hit, the odd paver rides up, and suddenly a toe-catcher is sitting proud of the walkway.

To identify what you have, look at the underside of a loose paver or the edge of the driveway where the restraint strip meets concrete. Mr-Glass pavers carry a molded size code and series mark on the bottom face. Take a photo of that code. We’ll match it to the right replacement rather than guessing from a top-down picture, because two pavers can look identical on the surface and be completely different underneath. As an independent service provider, we’re not affiliated with Mr-Glass, but we work with their specifications daily and keep common series matches on hand. We also carry compatible parts for KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone lines for the interior side of the same projects.

Signs Your Mr-Glass Driveway & Pavers Are Failing

  • Water is pooling in the same low spot after every rain. That means the base under that section has settled or washed out. In San Francisco’s clay-heavy soils, especially in Noe Valley and Glen Park, water doesn’t drain the way it does in sandier ground, and a small dip becomes a bigger one every winter.
  • One or two pavers have dropped below the surrounding field. The cause is usually a failed edge restraint. Once the edge lets go, the pavers start migrating outward, and the ones nearest the curb drop first.
  • You can see a hairline crack running across multiple pavers in a straight line. That’s not the pavers cracking. That’s the base shifting underneath them, and the pavers are telegraphing the fracture. Replacing the cracked units without fixing the base means you’ll replace them again next year.
  • Sand is washing out of the joints after every rain. Joint sand is the glue that locks the surface together. When it goes, the pavers start rubbing against each other, chipping edges and loosening the whole field. Sealing slows this down, but only if the base underneath is still sound.
  • A paver has cracked through the middle, not along an edge. Edge chips are normal wear. A clean center crack means that paver is carrying a point load it was never meant to carry, usually from a vehicle cutting the corner too tight or a base that wasn’t compacted in lifts.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For San Francisco homes, targeted paver replacement and base repair on a Mr-Glass driveway typically runs $1,500 to $5,000 depending on square footage and how deep the base damage goes. If the underlying gravel and sand need to be excavated and rebuilt, you’re in the $8,260 to $21,240 territory for a paver driveway installation or $5,900 to $16,520 for a full driveway replacement. Sealing alone, which extends the life of the joints and keeps the sand in place, lands at $295 to $825.

Every Mr-Glass driveway and pavers replacement we do includes a written price before work starts, the removal and disposal of the failed material, compaction of the base in lifts, fresh bedding sand at the correct depth, new or matched pavers, joint sand, and a clean site at close-out. You get a signed written guarantee in your hand when we’re done. Under the 365-Day Done Right Promise, if the repair fails within a year, we return and correct it at no charge. That covers base settlement, paver movement, and joint failure on work we installed.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground here. You can absolutely check your edge restraint strips, sweep sand back into the joints, and take photos of the underside codes without calling anyone. You can also monitor a small dip through one rain season to see if it’s stable or actively getting worse. What you shouldn’t do is pull up a section of Mr-Glass pavers, add sand, and drop them back in thinking the base is fine. Once the field is disturbed, the interlock is broken, and putting it back wrong creates a spot that fails faster than the original problem.

Compaction is the part that gets homeowners. A hand tamper does not equal a plate compactor, and if the base isn’t compacted in lifts, the new pavers will settle within months. That’s a wasted weekend and a double spend. If the base is involved, call us at (831) 610-5598. We’ll assess it, price it, and put the number in writing.
