Therma-Tru Bathroom Remodeling: The San Francisco Owner’s Guide

Therma-Tru bathroom remodeling in San Francisco typically runs $10,620 to $33,040 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing a failed door unit, rebuilding the shower surround, or gutting the full bath. Most jobs we handle are completed in 3 to 12 working days once materials land. You’re likely here because a Therma-Tru door or trim kit in your bathroom has failed, swollen, or separated, and you want to know if it can be fixed or if the whole opening needs to be rebuilt before you spend another dollar.

Which Therma-Tru Models This Applies To

A walk-in shower with large-format tile and a built-in niche

Therma-Tru builds fiberglass and composite door units under the Classic-Craft, Smooth-Star, and Pulse series lines, and in bathrooms we most often see Smooth-Star and Classic-Craft units used because of how they hold up to San Francisco’s fog and moisture. Identifying your exact model matters for one reason: Therma-Tru pre-hung units are machined to a specific rough opening, and the composite jambs on Classic-Craft are thicker than the fiberglass jambs on Smooth-Star. That means a door slab from one series will not hang correctly in the frame of another without re-machining the hinge mortises.

Check the sticker on the hinge edge of the door or the top of the frame, it will list the series and the model number. If that sticker is gone, measure the slab thickness and the jamb depth. Smooth-Star runs 1-3/8 inches thick on interior units; Classic-Craft runs 1-3/4 inches. We match OEM parts wherever possible, but for older Therma-Tru bathroom units that have been discontinued, we use quality aftermarket sills, sweeps, and weatherstripping that meet the same dimensional specs. We won’t substitute a part that changes the look or the fit.

Signs Your Therma-Tru Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing

  • Door drags or won’t latch at the strike plate. This is usually the door slab swelling from moisture absorption at the bottom edge, or the hinges have pulled loose from the jamb. In San Francisco bathrooms without proper exhaust, we see this within five to seven years on poorly sealed units.
  • Black staining or soft spots at the bottom corners of the jamb. Fog-driven moisture and shower steam condense on the cold composite and wick up into the jamb. Once the jamb legs rot or separate, the door unit needs replacement, not caulk.
  • Bubbling or peeling finish on the door face. Therma-Tru doors are factory primed, not finish-painted. If the original installer used latex paint over an unprimed factory edge, it will peel within a year. We sand back to substrate, re-prime, and repaint with a moisture-rated finish.
  • Sill leaks or water pooling at the threshold after showers. The sill pan under a Therma-Tru unit has a limited lifespan in high-humidity bathrooms. If the pan is cracked or the sill cap seal has failed, water gets under the unit and into the subfloor.
  • The door slams shut on its own or won’t stay open. This is a hinge alignment issue, usually from a shifting floor or a jamb that’s loosened from the rough opening. Shimming and re-securing the jamb fixes it if caught before the slab warps.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A remodeled hall bathroom with subway tile and a floating vanity

A Therma-Tru bathroom door unit replacement in San Francisco runs $3,540 to $8,260 installed, including demolition of the old unit, rough opening cleanup, new door, threshold, casing, and finish paint. A full bathroom remodel around the Therma-Tru unit, with shower surround, tile, vanity, and fixtures, lands in the $10,620 to $33,040 range depending on whether we’re moving plumbing and what surface materials you choose.

Scope San Francisco Price Range
Therma-Tru door unit replacement (installed) $3,540 – $8,260
Shower replacement with Therma-Tru door $3,540 – $10,030
Small bathroom remodel $5,900 – $14,160
Full bathroom remodel $10,620 – $33,040

Every quote is written, not spoken. You get the price before any work starts, and it doesn’t move at the door. Parts and labor are itemized on the same page. The work is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if anything fails inside a year, we come back and fix it at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check your exhaust fan, run a dehumidifier, and look for water staining around the threshold yourself. What you shouldn’t do is remove a Therma-Tru pre-hung unit from the opening unless you’ve pulled and re-set doors before. The composite jambs are structural to the frame, not decorative trim. Pulling the wrong screws or forcing the slab can crack the jamb, and that’s a full unit replacement instead of a hinge adjustment. If the door binds, the sill leaks, or the jamb has soft spots, call us at (831) 610-5598 and we’ll tell you over the phone whether it’s a repair or a replacement. Straight number, real scope, no surprises at close-out.
