Techo-Bloc Driveway & Pavers: The San Francisco Owner’s Guide
We install and replace Techo-Bloc driveway pavers and paver systems across San Francisco, with typical installed work running $8,260 to $21,240 depending on square footage, access, and whether the base layers need rebuilding. Most homeowners call us after one section of the driveway starts sinking, a row of pavers shifts out of alignment, or a paver cracks under vehicle load and the edges start spalling. The usual discovery point is a puddle that wasn’t there last winter, a wobble underfoot, or an oil stain that won’t come out of a cracked unit.
Here’s what we’ve learned working with Techo-Bloc product in San Francisco specifically: the freeze-thaw cycles here are mild compared to Tahoe, but the real enemy is moisture moving through clay-heavy soils under older neighborhoods. When the base was never compacted properly, fog-season saturation and dry-season settling work against each other, and pavers start telegraphing that movement within a few years. Techo-Bloc makes a good unit. The failure is almost always underneath it.
We stock Techo-Bloc-compatible replacement pavers for the most common San Francisco driveway applications, including the Blu 60, Industria, and Victorien lines, and Curtis Lane has walked enough Outer Sunset and Richmond District driveways to tell you within ten minutes whether your base is salvageable or whether you’re looking at a dig-out and rebuild. Call (831) 610-5598 for a free estimate that puts the number in writing before anything gets torn up.
Which Techo-Bloc Models This Applies To

Techo-Bloc makes several paver lines that show up on San Francisco driveways, and the compatibility question is more specific than “a Techo-Bloc paver.” The three we see most often are:
- Blu 60 – a smooth, contemporary paver at 60mm thickness, commonly used for both driveways and patios. It comes in a 3-unit modular blend. You need the right size mix or the pattern won’t lay.
- Industria – an 80mm paver, heavier and rated for stronger vehicle loads. If your driveway sees a lot of truck traffic or you park a heavier vehicle, this is the line we usually recommend.
- Victorien – a 70mm tumbled paver with an older-stone look. Common on older San Francisco homes where the driveway was designed to blend with the original architecture.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most people find out the hard way: you cannot match a 60mm paver with an 80mm paver on the same driveway surface. The height difference will telegraph through within months as a visible lip under tires, and eventually the taller unit will start chipping along the transition rows. If you’re replacing a section, we have to identify both the exact Techo-Bloc line and the thickness before we can pull matching units.
OEM Techo-Bloc pavers are made in Quebec, and when you order direct through authorized dealers, you’ll pay more and wait longer. Quality aftermarket equivalents exist, but they have to match three things: paver thickness, face texturing, and color blend. Get any one of those wrong and the patch looks like a patch from the curb. We maintain stock of the common San Francisco colors such as Shale Grey, Chestnut Brown, and Sandlewood, and we can order run-specific dye lots when a close match isn’t close enough.
One identifying tip: Techo-Bloc stamps a small logo and the paver name on the underside of most units made in the last 10 years. Flip a broken piece over before you throw it out. If there’s no stamp, we’ll match by measurement and a color chart sample against the bay window light in your neighborhood, which is a different animal than catalog photos under fluorescent store lighting.
Note: Bradford Remodeling Co San Francisco is an independent service provider. We install and replace Techo-Bloc products, but we are not affiliated with Techo-Bloc corporate.

Signs Your Techo-Bloc Driveway & Pavers Are Failing
- Pavers sinking in one area, usually along the tire paths. That’s base failure, not paver failure. Vehicle load compresses an undersized or uncompacted aggregate base, and the pavers go down with it. Patching surface pavers won’t stop the sink.
- Rows shifting sideways or opening up at the joints. The edge restraint has failed. Without a solid edge, the whole field of pavers migrates under tire pressure. This is especially common on San Francisco driveways that slope toward the street.
- Cracked or spalling pavers, usually on the side where a car sits overnight. A cracked unit means the base was uneven beneath that point, or the paver itself took an impact. Once moisture gets into a crack, freeze-thaw does the rest, even in our mild climate.
- Weeds or grass growing through joints that used to be tight. Sand joint loss. The polymeric sand has washed out or was never installed correctly. This lets water through to the base and accelerates every other failure on this list.
- Standing water or staining that won’t drain even when the grade looks fine. The driveway has shifted enough to reverse the slope pitch in places. On San Francisco lots with minimal street drainage, this becomes a problem before it looks like one from the street.
When we see two or more of these signs together, it’s rarely a patch job. Something structural is happening under the surface.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

Paver driveway replacement in San Francisco typically runs $8,260 to $21,240. Here’s what drives the spread:
- Square footage: a standard single-car driveway is 250-400 square feet; a wider double or side-by-side can push past 800. Material and labor both scale with area.
- Base condition: if the existing aggregate base was compacted properly, we can sometimes excavate 4-6 inches and rebuild cleanly. If the base is clay or mixed construction debris, we’re digging deeper and hauling more, which adds cost.
- Access: many San Francisco homes sit tight to the sidewalk with narrow side yards. If the excavator can’t reach the driveway, material moves by wheelbarrow, and labor costs go up.
- Paver selection: Blu 60 runs at a different material price point than Industria 80mm, and that difference shows up in the quote line item.
The replacement covers full excavation of the failed section, a rebuilt and compacted base, new bedding sand, new Techo-Bloc or matching pavers, fresh polymeric sand in the joints, and haul-away of the old material. You get a written line-item quote before we start, and the final invoice matches the quote. No change orders unless we uncover something genuinely hidden, and if that happens, we stop and show you before spending a dollar more.
All paver work is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the driveway settles, shifts, or a paver fails within a year of completion, we come back and correct it at no charge. That’s in writing, signed, in your hand at close-out.
DIY or Call Us?
For a single cracked paver, an owner can check a few things safely: mark the border of the sinking or shifting area with chalk, take photos after rain, and pull the broken unit to check the underside stamp and measure its thickness with a tape measure. That information helps us give you an accurate phone estimate before we schedule a site visit.
What we don’t recommend is pulling up a section of driveway and trying to reset it yourself. Pavers under vehicle load require a properly compacted base, the right bedding depth, and solid edge restraint. Do it wrong and the section you reset will sink or shift within a year, often worse than the original problem. You’ll also void any manufacturer fitment expectations and you’ll be tearing out your own work when we come to fix it right.
Call (831) 610-5598. Curtis or a member of the crew will answer, we’ll schedule a walk-through, and you’ll have a written price before you have to decide anything.
FAQs

A properly installed Techo-Bloc paver driveway on a compacted base should last 30 to 40 years in San Francisco’s climate before the pavers themselves degrade, though the polymeric sand joints will need re-sanding every 5 to 7 years. Patching a section on a bad base will fail inside 2 to 3 years, so before paying for pavers, make sure the quote covers the base. Call (831) 610-5598 for an assessment that tells you which situation you’re in.
Yes, if the failure is isolated to one area and the surrounding base is still intact, we can cut out the affected section, rebuild the base under it, and reinstall matching pavers. The hard part is the color match, which is why we ask for the stamp or a sample paver before quoting. Call us for a free estimate and we’ll tell you if a patch will hold.
A standard single-car San Francisco driveway replacement runs 3 to 5 working days, including excavation, base rebuild, paver installation, and joint sanding. Weather can stretch that, especially in the rainy months when we have to keep the subgrade dry enough to compact properly. We’ll give you a firm schedule in the written quote.
We keep the most common San Francisco colors and sizes on hand for Blues 60, Industria, and Victorien lines, including Shale Grey and Chestnut Brown blends. If your specific color or thickness isn’t in stock, we order it direct and usually have it on site within 7 to 10 days. Call (831) 610-5598 with your paver stamp info and we’ll tell you exactly what we have and what we need to order.
